GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team will play its final road match of the season when it takes on Cincinnati in American Athletic Conference action on Friday, Oct. 16. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., at Gettler Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT
East Carolina (7-7-2, 2-3-1 AAC) hung on for a 0-0 double overtime draw at Temple last Sunday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Saundra Baron made a career-high 13 saves to preserve her conference-leading eighth shutout of the season.
ALL-TIME VERSUS CINCINNATI
The Pirates and Bearcats will meet for the seventh time in history, while Cincinnati owns a 4-1-1 advantage in the all-time series. Cincy claimed a 3-0 win in Greenville in 2014, but ECU earned a 2-1 double overtime victory in its last trip to Gettler during the 2004 season.
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
Cincinnati (8-4-4, 3-2-1 AAC) got off to a hot start with a 3-0-1 record in conference play, before losing both of its matches at No. 18 UConn and Temple last weekend. The Bearcats own a 4-1-2 mark at home and are led by Danielle Rotheram's six goals, three assists, 15 points and 27 shots on goal - all of which rank first on the club. Jaycie Brown and Jordan Cotleur each have four goals apiece. Cincinnati utilizes multiple goalkeepers who have been equally impressive, as Sam Pavlika owns a 5-1-3 record with four shutouts and a 0.76 goals against average, while Natalie Smith is 3-3-1 with four shutouts and a 0.78 goals against average.
HEROICS & DRAMATICS
East Carolina has won three matches with less than a minute to play or later, including a pair of double overtime victories (Western Carolina & Charlotte) and on a goal with 31 seconds left in regulation (UCF). The Pirates also lost a match on a goal with 27 seconds to go (at SMU).
BARON'S BARREN NET
Redshirt senior goalkeeper has recorded eight shutouts in ECU's first 15 matches this season, the fourth most in a single season in program history. The Greensboro, N.C., native has blanked opponents in 14 in her last 24 starts dating back to 2014. Baron recorded her eighth shutout in a 13-save effort at Temple on Oct. 11. The 13 stops were the most in a single-game in American Conference history and the most by a Pirate goalkeeper since Oct. 7, 2012 when Christiane Cordero made 12 saves at Rice.
COUNTING DOWN
East Carolina women's soccer is just three victories shy of 200 in its history. Since the inception of the program in 1994, the Pirates have averaged greater than nine victories per season.
SEASON OF SHUTOUTS - THE SEQUEL?
ECU posted 11 shutouts in 2014, which tied the 2007 team for the most in a single season in school history, and the Pirates have eight in their first 16 games in 2015.
FREY FLUSHES UCF
Senior striker Kendall Frey entered the record books in dramatic fashion by scoring the game-winning goal with 31 seconds remaining in regulation to defeat UCF, 1-0, on Oct. 1. The goal was her 20th as a Pirate and moved her career point total to 48 - tied for the fifth most in program history.
HITE OUT OF NOWHERE
Junior defender Caitlin Hite scored her second-career goal at SMU on Sept. 27 - her first tally in exactly 50 games dating back to Sept. 2, 2013 in a 2-1 overtime win against Western Carolina - the fourth game of her collegiate career.
DOUBLE ORDER OF FREY
Kendall Frey scored both goals in ECU's 2-0 win at Houston on Sept. 24 - her second-career multi-goal game.
