GREENVILLE, N.C. - Kendall Frey registered a career-high five points with two goals and one assist as the East Carolina women's soccer team defeated Memphis, 3-0, in its regular season finale at Johnson Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the Pirates clinched the No. 8 seed in the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship and will face top-seeded and No. 11-ranked Connecticut in the first round on Tuesday, Nov. 3 in Dallas, Texas. The match will be broadcast live on The American Digital Network.
Senior goalkeeper Saundra Baron recorded her conference-leading ninth shutout of the season and made five saves to bring her league-leading count to 84 on the year. The nine scoreless outings rank tied for the third most in a single-season in program history with Amber Campbell who tallied the same total in 2008.
East Carolina (7-9-2, 2-5-1 AAC) was aggressive on its attack for much of the first 10 minutes of the match, before earning a counter opportunity in the 14th minute, where senior Stephanie Seagrave and junior Jenna Geist used a successful short passing game inside the Tigers' goal box, before finding Frey who turned and fired a shot from seven yards out into the top of the net to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
The score was Frey's fifth of the season and 21st of her career, moving her into a tie with Kelly Gray (1998-2001) for fifth on ECU's all-time goals list. The two points also increased her career total to 50, making her one of just five players in program history to reach that milestone.
Memphis (8-6-3, 3-3-2 AAC) got into its offense, settling possession in East Carolina's half of the field for a good portion of the subsequent 25 minutes, but the Pirates' back line and midfield worked collaboratively to block shots and keep the Tigers off the scoreboard into halftime.
The Pirates held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks in the first half and held the Tigers to just one shot on goal, while both sides took four shots apiece.
Memphis made an early push to tie the match in the first 25 minutes of the second half, but the ECU defense remained stout and took advantage with a quick strike as the Tigers began to wear down in the 70th minute. Junior Lana Spitler collected a ball near the far goal post and broke past goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel, before passing to a wide open Frey who punched home her second goal of the day and sixth of the season to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team.
Just over 12 minutes later, in the 82nd minute, East Carolina earned another break on a missed assignment in Memphis' midfield, when Frey touched a perfect through pass to Seagrave who chipped a shot from 10 yards out over Bard-Martel and into the left corner of the net to extend ECU's lead to 3-0.
The goal was Seagrave's third of the season and gave her a trio of points on the day, matching a career-high. Her last three-point performance came Sept. 13, 2013 in a win at Francis Marion.
The Tigers outshot the Pirates, 12-9, overall on the day while both sides were even in corner kicks at three apiece and shots on goal at five each.
