PROVIDENCE, R.I. - For the third time this season, East Carolina junior high jumper Avion Jones has garnered the American Athletic Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor. The latest award comes on the heels of Jones' school-record breaking performance at the Doc Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet last weekend.
In Blacksburg, Va., Jones bested his previous school record mark with a personal-record clearance of 2.24-meters (7' 4.25") to win the men's high jump. His mark is good for fifth in the nation and is just .25 inches shy of tying for third in the country.
"To be named American Athletic Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the third time is an unbelievable accomplishment," Head coach Curt Kraft said. "Probably the most impressive thing about all of these accolades has been Avion's ability to remain humble and appreciative throughout."
This season alone, Jones has reset the East Carolina school record three times. He also holds the standard for the Pirates in the outdoor season with a high jump clearance of 2.21-meters (7' 3").
"I think Avion realizes that the best is yet to come," Kraft explained. "He is a very driven and focused young man. One of the things that makes Avion a great competitor is that he is never satisfied with his accomplishments. Once he has reached a goal, he resets his standard for something greater. No pun intended, but he really raises the bar. Words cannot describe how proud we are of Avion."
Jones earned the honors along with Patrick Hayes of UConn who was named Men's Track Athlete of the Week as well as UConn's Faith Dismuke (Women's Track Athlete of the Week) and Memphis' Carolina Carmichael (Women's Field Athlete of the Week).
