NEW YORK - In their first-ever American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, the East Carolina track and field team came away with a pair of event victories, one new school record, 17 personal bests and had 11 all-conference selections. The competitive meet saw the Pirate men finish seventh with 49 points, while the women claimed ninth with 45 points. Houston won the American Conference title on the men's side with 135 points and UConn was crowned the women's champion with 108 points.
"We had a lot of great performances over the weekend," Head coach Curt Kraft said. "Before the weekend started, I said if we set school records, season bests and get people on the podium that we would have accomplished a lot of our goals. We did all of the above and more, but now we have to turn our attention to the outdoor season and focus on having a good showing for both teams."
Sophomore Cheyenne Hutchinson won the 60-meter hurdles as she ran a personal-best time of 8.26 which was .06 half seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Her time was just .02 half seconds shy of the East Carolina school record as she sits in second in program history.
Avion Jones was the event winner on the men's side as he claimed first in the high jump with a clearance of 2.14-meters (7' 0.25"). His mark was more than four inches better than the second-place finisher as he took home the gold.
Hutchinson and Jones both earned American All-Conference honors for their efforts at the championships.
East Carolina finished the meet with 11 Pirates on the podium. Earning second team honors were Tyshonda Hawkins, Lauren Lubarski and Henry Johnson, while Leah Lott, Demonte Wilson and the relay squad of Able Tecle, Jordan Martin, Justin Lane and Chase Miller all garnered third team accolades.
Hawkins was solid in her performance in the 200-meter dash. The senior sprinter earned a second-place finish with a time of 23.76. Her time was just .14 half seconds off of her career-best and school record time of 23.62 which she set in 2013.
Lubarski, a junior thrower and jumper, finished second in the high jump with a personal-record clearance of 1.74-meters (5' 8.5"). She was just a quarter-of-an-inch shy of first place in the event. Additionally, Lubarski's mark places her second all-time at East Carolina.
In the men's pole vault, Johnson garnered a second-place finish as he recorded a mark of 5.13-meters (16' 10") in the event for all-conference honors.
Lott, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, Va., was one of many Pirates who turned in a personal record time at the conference championships. Her mark of 5.95-meters (19' 6.25") placed her third in the event as she made her way to the podium with the fourth-best tally in ECU program history.
On the track, junior Demonte Wilson earned a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles as he recorded a personal-best time of 8.03 in the event. His time also ranks him fifth in the East Carolina annals.
The men's distance medley relay squad of Tecle, Martin, Lane and Miller rounded out the all-conference selections as the team registered a time of 10:05.77 to come in third in the event and place sixth all-time at ECU.
Jasmine Thompson, a senior from Clay, N.Y., was the only Pirate to break a school record at the conference championships as she set a new pentathlon record with 3,263 points on the first day of competition.
