March 26, 2015 | Track & Field
GREENVILLE, N.C. - After opening the outdoor season last week at the 49er Classic, the East Carolina track and field team heads to Raleigh, N.C., to take part in the Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State. The Pirates will compete in the two-day meet beginning Friday, March 27 and concluding Saturday, March 28.
The Pirates will be going up against some of the top competition in the nation in North Carolina, Duke, Virginia Tech, and host, NC State.
"The Raleigh Relays are one of the best meets in the country," Head coach Curt Kraft stated. "The student-athletes always look forward to this meet as they compete against some of the best team and athletes in the country.
"We are coming off of a meet last weekend with a lot of momentum and confidence," Kraft explained. "The goal for this weekend is to show steady improvement across the board. We feel, as a staff, that we have had some great practices and the student-athletes are feeling good about themselves."
A week ago, East Carolina won three event victories in the season opener and set several new personal record times. Freshman Xavier Brown was on point for ECU as he turned in a pair of event victories en route to being named American Athletic Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week. Brown posted two personal-best times to win the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles before finishing in the top 15 in the 100-meter dash.
East Carolina looks to bring the positive vibes and competitive nature to this weekend's meet at the Paul Derr Track in Raleigh.
The Pirates will compete in the Raleigh Relays for the first time since 2011. Four years ago, ECU turned in a solid effort as two school records fell. The women's 4x200-meter relay team of Tania Minkins, Tyshonda Hawkins, Tiffany Harris and Aiesha Goggins ran a then-program-record time of 1:35.91.
Additionally, the women's high jump school record was reset as former Pirate and All-American Tynita Butts posted a then-school-record mark of 1.80-meters.
ECU would like to see another successful performance in Raleigh this weekend as the Pirates prepare for the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., April 3 and 4.
