Pirates Shut Out By Charlotte, 4-0
March 28, 2015 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Tyler Baker and Macy Vonderschmidt's 6-4 win over Dana Gray and Katie Hoch in a No. 3 doubles match clinched the opening point and fueled Charlotte's 4-0 non-conference victory over East Carolina Saturday morning at the ECU Indoor Tennis Facility.
In addition to spoiling Senior Day activities in their home finale, the setback also marked the fourth consecutive loss for the Pirates (11-9). The 49ers extended their win streak to three in a row and improved to 8-8 this spring.
After Michelle Castro and Nicole LaDuca evened pairs play by dismissing Fleur Holtkamp and Victoria Pahlett 6-4 at No. 1 for their seventh triumph of the season, Baker and Vonderschmidt got Charlotte off to a 1-0 lead and set the tone for a strong ensuing singles performance.
The 49ers followed by notching straight-set singles wins in the top three positions of the lineup to complete the sweep, the third recently suffered by East Carolina in as many outings.
LaDuca fell to Pahlett 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1, Castro lost to Vonderschmidt 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 and Lisa Grosselius battled past Maria Gomez 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 3 slot to clinch the victory for Charlotte.
The Pirates will close out the non-conference portion of their 2015 schedule when they travel to Richmond next Friday for a 1 p.m. match against the Spiders.
