GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jacob Wolfe tossed six scoreless innings for his first collegiate win, while East Carolina pounded out 15 hits completing the doubleheader sweep of Monmouth, 9-0, Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Wolfe (1-1) followed Evan Kruczynski's outing from earlier in the day scattering three hits over six frames while tying his career-high with six strikeouts. The lefty faced 21 batters (three over the minimum), which included three perfect innings. He fanned at least one hitter in 5 of 6 innings, retired the first and last five he faced, and never pitched to more than four batters in an inning.
ECU (8-5) jumped out to an early leading scoring six runs on seven hits while sending 10 batters to the plate. Reid Love got things going leading off the game with a solo shot - his first as a Pirate - sending a ball over the left field wall. Consecutive base hits by Eric Tyler, Bryce Harman and Travis Watkins pushed across the second run of the inning when Harman touched home on Watkins' single through the right side.
The inning continued when Jimmy Boyd reached on a fielder's choice putting runners on the corners for Jackson Mims, who singled home Harman with a shot to right field. Yorgen extended his hit streak to seven games with another RBI single to right field plating Boyd and Garrett Brooks' laced a two-RBI base hit over the centerfielder's head scoring Mims and Yorgen for a 6-0 advantage.
Frank Trimarco (0-2) took the loss working one inning where he was touched for all six runs on seven hits. Matt Littrell allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits in three innings, while Justin Andrews (3.0 IP) and Ricky Dennis (1.0 IP) closed out the game with four scoreless frames of relief.
ECU got perfect innings of relief from Luke Bolka (strikeout), Nick Durazo (strikeout) and Cam Snow (three strikeouts) to hold the Hawks scoreless on the day and extending Monmouth's drought of scoring runs to 41-straight innings.
Harman extended the Pirates lead to seven, 7-0, in the second inning with an RBI single to center that scored Tyler from second. Tyler, who recorded three hits and scored three times in the contest, led off the stanza with a double down the left field line.
ECU would plate a pair of runs in the fourth pushing its advantage to 9-0. Tyler scored when Watkins reached on an error and two batters later, Watkins crossed home on Mims' third hit of the contest - an RBI single up the middle.
Eight of the Pirates' starting nine recorded hits in the game with Mims and Tyler each collecting a career-best three. Brooks, Harman and Yorgen each had two hits, while Hunter Allen, Love and Watkins added one.
The Pirates will look to pick up its eighth-straight win at home and second consecutive series sweep when they host the Hawks Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. (ET).
