East Carolina Opens Bill Carson Invitational with Two Event Wins
April 10, 2015 | Track & Field
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina track and field team opened action at the Bill Carson Invitational and the Pirate women came away with two event victories on Friday. After the first day of action, the ECU women's squad is in first place with 40 points, while the men's team is in third with 27 points. However, the men are just two points away from moving into second place.
"It was a great day all the way around," Head coach Curt Kraft stated. "Before the weekend started, I mentioned that we were very excited to compete at home and that we would expect people to have PRs and that's exactly what happened. We also won the women's hammer with a great performance from Kaylee Redon. I was very happy to see Kaylee have a major breakthrough in the hammer."
The Pirates got things going in the field events as senior Kaylee Redon won the hammer throw with a personal-best heave of 60.50-meters (198' 6"). Her toss ranks her second all-time at ECU. She and teammate Mohogany Baker set the tone in the hammer as the tandem earned first and second place, respectively. Baker, a freshman thrower, recorded a career-best mark of 49.65-meters (162' 11") in the event as her toss was more than one foot further than the third place finisher.
Baker came back and claimed first in the discus throw with a personal-record mark of 43.67-meters (143' 3"). With that throw, she found herself in the ECU record book with the eighth-best toss in program history. Fellow Pirate Kourtney Edwards-Campbell followed suit as she picked up a PR of her own with a heave of 35.70-meters (117' 1") to place fifth.
"We performed well on the women's side, but the men's hammer throwers also threw very well," Kraft said. "We got a few more PRs from Thomas Lehman and Adam Manns."
On the men's side Thomas Lehman and Adam Manns led East Carolina. The duo recorded a pair of career-bests in the hammer throw as Lehman placed fourth and Manns came in seventh. Lehman's toss of 53.19-meters (174' 6") moves him into eighth all-time at ECU, while Manns' mark of 48.09-meters (157' 9") puts him 10th.
In the men's discus throw, Manns finished second with a mark of 47.94-meters (157' 3"), while Lehman earned a fourth-place finish with a tally of 41.93-meters (137' 7"). Senior Dylan Spadaccini came in 10th with a mark of 29.93-meters (98' 2"), while Joey Muzzio earned a PR of 28.87-meters (94' 9") to place 11th.
Muzzio collected another personal-record in the javelin with a tally of 45.07-meters (147' 10") for a fifth-place finish. Behind him were Spadaccini (43.75-meters, 143' 6") and Desmond Brown (43.62-meters, 143' 1") who placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Rounding out the Pirate competitors in the javelin was Alexander Mobley-Hollie with a mark of 31.50-meters (103' 4") to place 13th.
"I was happy with how we did today," Kraft said. "Now we have to have a good day tomorrow and finish off the weekend with a lot of confidence and enthusiasm."
The Pirates conclude action in the Bill Carson Invitational Saturday, April 11. Field events begin at 11 a.m., while track events start at 11:30 a.m.
