April 14, 2015 | Track & Field
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - East Carolina junior Avion Jones took home his fourth American Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week award of his career on Tuesday evening when the league announced the weekly honors.
Jones earned the accolades after winning the high jump at the Bill Carson Invitational over the weekend with a season-best clearance of 2.20-meters (7' 2.5"). His mark was just one meter off of his career-best, which is also the East Carolina outdoor school record. Additionally, Jones is ranked sixth in the nation with his mark.
"This is a testimonial to all of the hard work and dedication Avion displays in the high jump," Head coach Curt Kraft said. "He is having a great outdoor season up to this point. He needs to stay focused and to continue to work hard. I believe the very best is yet to come."
The Virginia Beach, Va., native has excelled during both the indoor and outdoor season winning indoor male field athlete of the week honors three times. This is his first outdoor honor of the year.
"Avion has set his goals very high for the outdoor season," Kraft stated. "I have said this many times before and I will continue to say it - Avion is not satisfied with just doing well. He wants to do great in everything he does."
Jones won the weekly award along with Memphis' Corentin Louis (men's track), Cincinnati's Kenya Woodall (women's track) and Memphis' Carolina Carmichael (women's field).
This weekend, Jones will lead East Carolina at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va. The two-day meet begins Friday, April 17 and concludes Saturday, April 18.
