CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Sophomore Jorge Montes broke the East Carolina school record in the men's 5,000-meter run at the Virginia Challenge and Leah Lott won the women's long jump as the Pirates turned in another strong showing over the weekend.
Montes, who set the men's 3,000-meter run record a week ago, shattered the 5,000-meter run at the Virginia Challenge with a time of 14:40.36 which was nearly six seconds faster than the previous school record which was set in 1978 by former Pirate Jim Dill. Montes led the way in the 5,000-meter run as senior Chase Miller came in behind him with a personal-record time of 15:07.98 to move into seventh all-time at ECU.
In addition to Montes' and Miller's top performances, junior Brather Cline also recorded a new personal-best time of 3:54.03 in the 1,500-meter run. Cline is now ranked eighth in the ECU record book.
In the field, freshman Tyler Banks placed fourth in the high jump with a personal-record mark of 2.02-meters (6' 7.5"). His clearance moves him into the East Carolina record book in the eight spot.
Rounding out the top 10 finishers for the men was sophomore Adam Manns who came in fifth in the discus throw invite with a heave of 51.20-meters (167' 11"). He is now ranked fourth all-time at East Carolina.
