May 01, 2015 | Women's Golf
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - East Carolina junior Frida Gustaffson Spang was one of four unanimous selections to the 2015 American All-Conference Team the league announced Friday afternoon.
Spang, who was selected as an individual to participate in the 2015 NCAA Raleigh Regional, is the seventh golfer in program history to be named to three all-conference teams in her career joining Abby Bools, Jessica Krasny, Amber Littman, Adrienne Millican, Amy Otteson and Fanny Wolte. Both Bools and Wolte garnered four-straight all-conference accolades in Conference USA.
"This is a very deserving honor for Frida," ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams said. "She played consistent golf all year, which showed the growth of her game."
Spang recorded eight top 15 finishes with six coming during the spring portion of the Pirates schedule including a share of 13th at the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship with a 6-over par 222 (74-77-71). The Sweden native won individual medalist honors at the Minnesota Invitational (9-under/207) in September earning her AAC Golfer-of-the-Month honors. On the season she owns a team-best 73.83-stroke average that is currently tied for the fourth-lowest single-season stroke average in the Pirate annuals.
As a freshmen she set the new school standard with a 73.50 average and became the first golfer in C-USA history to earn Player and Freshman-of-the-Year accolades in the same season. Spang joined Bools (2008, 2010) as the only golfers in school history to take home player-of-the-year accolades, while becoming the fourth to earn freshman-of-the-year honors (Lene Krog/2006, Littman/2008, Wolte/2011).
Last year Spang posted a 73.61 stroke average which ranks third all-time. She earned her second-straight First-Team All C-USA honor after recording eight top 20 finishes in 11 events.
During her three years as a member of the golf team, Spang owns a 73.64 career average in 43 events, which is the lowest in school history. She has posted three career wins to go along with five top 5's, 12 top 10's and 22 top 20 finishes.
Spang kicks off her third-straight NCAA postseason appearance on Thursday, May 7 at 7:30 a.m. from the first hole at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C., which is hosted by NC State.
