Women in Second Place After Day One of AAC Championships

STORRS, Conn. - After the first day of action at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, the East Carolina women's team is tied for second, while the men's squad sits in third place. The Pirate women tallied 14 points, along with SMU, to claim second place, as the two teams are just four points behind first place UConn with 18 points. On the men's side, ECU tallied six points and is in a three-way tie with Cincinnati and Tulane for third place. Tulsa (31 points) and UConn (17 points) occupy first and second, respectively.
East Carolina turned in a strong showing on the first day of competition as the Pirates competed in the men's and women's hammer throw, decathlon, heptathlon and women's 10,000-meter run.
Senior Kaylee Redon led the ECU women's squad as she won the hammer throw with a heave of 58.30-meters (191' 3") en route to a First Team All-Conference nod. Coming in behind Redon was freshman Mohogany Baker who placed ninth with a mark of 51.44-meters (169' 9").
Junior Shewit Weldense was the Pirates' top finisher in the 10,000-meter run as she came in sixth with a personal-record time of 36:00.65. She bettered her previous career-best by 45 seconds and moved up in the ECU record book as she now sits in third place all-time. Weldense paced teammates Caroline Reiser (36:10.77) and Amanda Tomlin (37:52.55) who placed eighth and 12th, respectively.
In the heptathlon, the Pirates were led by junior Madison Rayfield who won the 100-meter hurdles (14.19) and 200-meter dash (24.86) to lead all competitors in the event with a total of 900 points. East Carolina also sent sophomore Aminah Ghaffar and senior Jasmine Thompson into competition in the heptathlon. After the first day, Ghaffar tallied 785 points to place fifth, while Thompson sat in eighth place with 694 points. The heptathlon will conclude Friday, May 15.
On the men's side senior Thomas Lehman earned a third place finish in the hammer throw after recording a career-best mark of 56.83-meters (186' 5"). He bettered his previous PR by nearly 12 feet and moved from eighth all-time at ECU to fifth in the school record book. Lehman came away with a Third Team All-Conference nod while pacing teammate Adam Manns who finished 11th with a mark of 47.36-meters (155' 4").
In the decathlon, East Carolina was led by junior Joey Muzzio who is currently sitting in second place with 811 points. He won the high jump in the decathlon with a personal-record clearance of 2.11-meters (6' 11") which is three inches better than his previous PR. Muzzio, who was sixth all-time at ECU in the high jump, now moves into fourth place in the school record book.
Teammate Alexander Mobley-Hollie isn't too far behind Muzzio as he sits in fourth place in the decathlon with a total of 777 points. Rounding out the Pirates is Dylan Spadaccini who is in eighth place with 698 points. The decathlon will conclude Friday, May 15.
The Pirates look to continue their strong start to the conference championships on day two as East Carolina competes in the men's and women's 800-meter run trials, men's and women's 400-meter hurdle trials, men's and women's 200-meter dash trials, men's and women's discus, women's pole vault and men's and women's multi-events. Day two of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships begins at 10 a.m. (ET) on Friday, May 15.
