Jones Wins Men's High Jump at AAC Championships

STORRS, Conn. - East Carolina junior Avion Jones took first in the men's high jump as the men's team is in fifth place with 35.50 points, while the women's squad sits in sixth place with 25.50 on day three of the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.
Memphis leads the American Conference Championships with 74.50 total points, while SMU is in first with 71 points on the women's side.
Jones, who is East Carolina's current school record holder in the high jump, came out and won the event with a mark of 2.15-meters (7' 0.5"). He was the only athlete to clear the seven-foot mark. With the first-place finish, Jones came away with a First Team All-Conference nod. He led fellow teammates Joey Muzzio, Rodney Johnson and Tyler Banks who all turned in a clearance of 1.96-meters (6; 5").
Senior Henry Johnson narrowly missed an all-conference nod in the pole vault as he came away with a fourth-place finish after recording a mark of 5.18-meters (17' 0"). Johnson's clearance tied his current personal and school-record mark as he is the only Pirate in program history to reach 17 feet in the event.
In the javelin, junior Kyle Hefkin represented East Carolina with a fifth-place finish as he posted a mark of 66.54-meters (218' 4"). Rounding out the men's field events on Saturday was Alexander Mobley-Hollie as he placed ninth in the long jump with a mark of 6.85-meters (22' 5.75").
On the track, Quay Johnson and Desmond Dowling qualified for the 400-meter dash finals after posting times of 47.40 and 48.05, respectively, in the preliminaries.
Additionally, Xavier Brown and Demonte Wilson earned qualifying times in the 110-meter hurdles as they finished the preliminaries in 14.56 and 14.82, respectively.
Freshman Pol Solanellas bettered his previous personal record time in the 1,500-meter run by .01 half-seconds as he placed ninth with a new PR of 3:53.78. His time ranks him fifth all-time at East Carolina.
On the women's side, the Pirates came away with several qualifying times on the track. Tania Minkins and Tyshonda Hawkins moved onto the finals in the 100-meter dash as the duo turned in respective times of 11.76 and 11.99.
Senior Aiesha Goggins, who owns the ECU school record in the 400-meter dash, qualified for the finals with a time of 52.60. She was the only Pirate representative in the event.
The Pirates came away with three qualifiers in the 100-meter hurdles as Cheyenne Hutchinson (13.64), Leah Lott (14.36) and Madison Rayfield (14.39) advanced in the preliminaries. Rayfield's time marked a personal-best for the junior as she moved into ninth in the East Carolina school record book.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Caitlyn Sheva was the Pirates' top finisher with a time of 11:17.23. She paced teammate Maura McDonnell who placed 12th with a time of 11:45.10.
In the long jump, the Pirates were led by sophomore Leah Lott who came i n sixth with a mark of 5.89-meters (19' 4"). Hutchinson followed in seventh place with a tally of 5.79-meters (19').
East Carolina will wrap up the Conference Championships Sunday, May 17 with the field events beginning at 10 a.m., while the track events begin at 11 a.m.
