
ECU Track & Field Ready for NCAA East Regionals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The 2015 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field East Regionals begins action Thursday, May 28 in Jacksonville, Fla., and East Carolina will be represented by 16 student-athletes during the three-day event.
"We are very excited about the student-athletes who qualified for the NCAA East Regionals," Head Coach Curt Kraft said. "Each and every one of these athletes has had a great year and all deserve to be here at this meet. This is an extremely competitive meet from all aspects. If you are not physically and mentally ready to compete, this competition will get the best of you. It is our goal to qualify as many people as we can to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. I feel very confident that both teams are ready to go."
There are nine ECU women and seven Pirate men at the NCAA East Regionals and five student-athletes will compete in field events, while 11 will see action on the track.
Day one of the NCAA East Regionals will see junior Janieyah Collins compete in the first round of the women's 400-meter hurdles along with freshman Xavier Brown, junior Chandler Chase and sophomore Rodney Johnson in the first round of the men's 400-meter hurdles. The Pirates will also send senior Tania Minkins to the track in the first round of the women's 100-meter dash before redshirt senior Aiesha Goggins sees action in the women's 400-meter dash, which is also a first round event.
Freshman Galissia Cause is the only Pirate to compete in the field on day one as she will see action in the women's shot put.
The second day of competition, May 29, will send junior Cheyenne Hutchinson to the track in the first round of the women's 100-meter hurdles. Fellow senior Tyshonda Hawkins will also see action on the track and she is scheduled to appear in the first round of the women's 200-meter dash. On the men's side, junior Demonte Wilson will compete in the first round of the men's 110-meter hurdles.
The Pirates will also send senior Henry Johnson, junior Avion Jones and sophomore Joey Muzzio into action on the field as Johnson will compete in the pole vault, while Jones and Muzzio will participate in the high jump.
In the event any Pirates from the first round of the women's 400-meter dash, women's 100-meter dash, women's 400-meter hurdles or men's 400-meter hurdles qualify, they will compete on day two in the quarterfinals.
On the final day of competition, May 30, senior Kaylee Redon will see action in the first round of the women's hammer throw. The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Jasmine Dawson, Hawkins, Minkins and Madison Rayfield will open the track events with the quarterfinals of the event.
If the first round participants of the women's 100-meter hurdles, women's 200-meter dash and men's 110-meter hurdles qualify, they will compete in the quarterfinals in their respective events.
The qualifiers from the NCAA East Regionals will advance to the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., which takes place from June 10-13, at Hayward Field.
