May 08, 2015 | Track & Field
DURHAM, N.C. - In an effort to give the East Carolina track and field team extra preparation for the upcoming American Athletic Conference Championships next weekend, head coach Curt Kraft sent five Pirates to the Duke Twilight Invitational on Thursday. At the competition, the men's 4x100-meter relay squad came home with an event victory, while sophomore Taylor Drummonds saw action in the women's pole vault.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team, which was comprised of senior Michael Neal, senior Joe Wilson, freshman Jordan Martin and freshman Xavier Brown, finished first after running the relay in 40.97. The time marks the fastest time set by an ECU 4x100-meter relay team this season. The Pirates' quartet beat out North Carolina, which placed second with a time of 41.51, and Campbell, which placed third with a time of 43.43.
Drummonds represented the East Carolina women's team as she placed seventh in the pole vault. The Boone, N.C., native registered a clearance of 3.75-meters (12' 3.5") which was four inches shy of her personal-best and school-record mark of 3.85-meters (12' 7.5"). She set that record during her last outing at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational hosted by the University of Florida.
East Carolina's next action will take place in Storrs, Conn., at the American Conference Athletic Championships which begin Thursday, May 14 and conclude Sunday, May 17. Live stats and video will be available on TheAmerican.org.
