GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team racked up 12 shots on goal, but was unable to find the back of the net in a 0-0 double overtime draw against Loyola-Chicago in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Johnson Soccer Stadium.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Saundra Baron made two saves and played all 110 minutes for her second shutout of the season, while senior forward Kendall Frey and junior striker Lana Spitler each took five shots, respectively, and combined for nine shots on goal. Junior defender Autumn Berry earned some open looks on the offensive attack and took three shots, two of which were on net.
"In the first half, I thought we were switching at the point of attack and wore them down a bit, but we didn't score," head coach Rob Donnenwirth said. "We took nine shots in the first half and I thought we had some good looks. Maybe the shot wasn't as good or the final cross wasn't as good as it could've been, but overall, from box-to-box, I thought we did some good things."
With less than 18 minutes to play in the first half, Spitler's corner kick found the foot of Frey in front of the Loyola's net, but her shot was blocked by the goalkeeper. The rebound bounced to senior Jackie Cajigal in the box, but her shot went wide to the right of the goal.
The Pirates dominated the first 45 minutes of play, outshooting the Ramblers 9-1 overall and 5-0 in shots on goal, while holding a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
In the 58th minute, Loyola had its best scoring opportunity when a midfielder ripped a shot from 25 yards out that struck the crossbar, but was cleared by the ECU defense to avoid any further threat.
East Carolina responded with bursts of offensive attacking power, getting off four shots on goal down the stretch, but could not evolve any of those chances into goals and the match remained scoreless after 90 minutes of play.
The Pirates concluded regulation with a 15-5 advantage in total shots and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. The Ramblers held a 7-6 lead in corner kicks.
"I thought they rattled us a little bit in the second half," Donnenwirth said. "They were trying to put more high pressure on us and defend in our end (of the field), but we just weren't making good decisions at the point of attack. I thought we took it back at the end and during overtime, and we had some chances. We just need to be a little more clinical and have a little more quality at certain points of the game, especially around the goal."
The first 10-minute overtime period saw ECU earn a pair of corner kick chances and one shot on goal, while Loyola had two corner kicks in the second overtime, but the Pirates held a 2-0 lead in the shots on goal column.
East Carolina will open up a four-game road trip on Friday, Aug. 28 when it heads to Williamsburg, Va., to take on William & Mary. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
