GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team will play the second of four-straight road matches when it heads to Washington, D.C., Sunday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m., to take on George Washington.
LAST TIME OUT
The Pirates suffered their first loss of the season, 3-0, at William & Mary on Friday evening. The Tribe scored all three goals in the first half, despite ECU's dominant second half where it held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks and 6-2 edge in total shots.
SCOUTING THE COLONIALS
George Washington enters Sunday's match on seven days' rest after posting a 1-1 record on its opening weekend road trip to California. The Colonials earned a 1-0 overtime win over UC Riverside to begin the season, before suffering a 4-1 loss at Cal State Fullerton just two days later. Mackenzie Crowley and Lina Proska each have one goal on the year.
SERIES HISTORY
The Pirates and Colonials will meet for the second time in the last three years after the two clubs met for the first time in Greenville during the 2013 season. In that initial meeting, ECU and GWU played to a 1-1 draw after Kendall Frey scored in the 54th minute and goalkeeper Saundra Baron made seven saves.
AAC GOALKEEPER-OF-THE-WEEK
Redshirt senior Saundra Baron was named the first American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper-of-the-Week for the 2015 season on Aug. 24 after posting back-to-back shutouts against George Mason and Loyola-Chicago. She made six saves across 200 scoreless minutes to help the Pirates to a 1-0-1 record.
TAKING QUALITY SHOTS
ECU has been extremely efficient with its shooting through its first three matches this season, putting 25 of 40 (.625) shots on goal. Senior Kendall Frey has put eight of her 10 attempts on net, while junior Lana Spitler is 9-for-12, including a 5-for-5 performance against Loyola-Chicago on Aug. 23.
AN UNFORTUNATE DOZEN
East Carolina had 12 of its shots saved by Loyola-Chicago goalkeeper Maddie Ford on Aug. 23, marking the first time an opposing goalkeeper has made 12 saves against the Pirate offense since Francis Marion during the 2005 season
FRESHMEN FITTING IN
Three Pirate freshmen, defender Lindsey Tornabene, forward Courtney Cash and defender Madeleine Watson have seen significant minutes early on this season. Tornabene has started and played every minute in each match thus far, while Cash and Watson have played big minutes as substitutes.
COUNTING DOWN
East Carolina women's soccer begins the 2015 season just nine victories shy of 200 in its history. Since the inception of the program in 1994, the Pirates have averaged greater than nine victories per season.
