WASHINGTON, D.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team suffered its second straight loss, 3-0, in non-conference action at George Washington on Sunday afternoon.
George Washington (2-1) got to work early with its offensive attack, pressuring ECU's back line from the opening kickoff. In the 10th minute, the Colonials' midfield sent a long through-pass down the center of the Pirates' defense where Mackenzie Cowley collected the ball to the right of the goal before finishing a shot high into the back of the net for the first score of the afternoon.
In the 24th minute, George Washington earned a corner kick to keep the ball deep in East Carolina territory and eventually sent in a cross that resulted in a loose ball in the goal box. Brooke Stoller gathered the ball, passed it to Cowley who slipped a shot past goalkeeper Saundra Baron for her second goal of the day to push the Colonials' lead to 2-0.
The Pirates earned their first corner kick of the afternoon in the 30th minute that did not materialize into a threat, but a long pass from the left side of the midfield in the 38th minute that looked strikingly similar to the Colonials' first goal went ahead to senior forward Stephanie Seagrave, but her shot went just wide of the far goal post.
George Washington took its 2-0 lead on the scoreboard and a 6-1 advantage in corner kick chances into halftime, despite both sides taking just three shots apiece.
East Carolina was very aggressive for the first 30 minutes of the second half, taking a handful of shots and possessing the ball deep in the Colonials' territory, but unable to get on the scoreboard.
George Washington had a favorable opportunity in the 80th minute when a long pass went down the near sideline to an open striker, but she was fouled inside ECU's goal box for a penalty kick. Emily Brown took the free kick and placed it into the left corner past Baron for the third and final tally of the afternoon.
The Pirates held a 9-6 overall edge in shots taken, but the Colonials owned a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
East Carolina will travel to Harrisonburg, Va., next Friday, Sept. 4 to face James Madison. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
