LAST TIME OUT
East Carolina picked up its first non-conference road victory of the season Sunday evening, defeating UNC Greensboro, 3-0. Junior striker Lana Spitler scored twice and senior forward Kendall Frey assisted on all three goals, while redshirt senior goalkeeper Saundra Baron made six saves in her third shutout of the year. The performance marked Spitler's second-career multi-goal game and first since last season when she struck twice in a 2-0 home victory over Temple. The three assists were a career high for Frey as the multi-assist game was the second of her career, the first coming in last year's 2-0 win over Davidson.
ALL-TIME VERSUS WESTERN CAROLINA
The Pirates and Catamounts will meet for the third straight year and eighth time overall, as ECU has been victorious each of the last five matchups. ECU earned a 1-0 victory on a Jenna Geist score in Cullowhee in 2014, while the last matchup in Greenville was a bit more dramatic, as Lexi Miller headed in a golden goal with under a minute to play in double overtime to cap a 2-1 win.
SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS
Western Carolina (3-2-1) is coming off a 1-0 home victory over Longwood on Sunday and owns a 1-1 record on the road thus far in 2015. Kimberly Sullivan and Kasey Cooke lead the team with two goals apiece, while Sayres McKenna tops all players with five points (one goal and three assists). Goalkeeper Carly Tinstman has allowed just three goals in 450 minutes of time in net for a 0.60 goals against average to go along with 25 saves and a .893 save percentage.
TOUGH STRETCH
East Carolina is going through what might be the most rigorous portion of its 2015 schedule, a stretch of five non-conference road matches in six games. As part of that, the Pirates recently completed a four-game road trip.
AAC GOALKEEPER-OF-THE-WEEK
Redshirt senior Saundra Baron was named the first American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper-of-the-Week for the 2015 season on Aug. 24 after posting back-to-back shutouts against George Mason and Loyola-Chicago. She made six saves across 200 scoreless minutes to help the Pirates to a 1-0-1 record.
TAKING QUALITY SHOTS
ECU has been extremely efficient with its shooting through its first four matches this season, putting 41 of 69 (.594) shots on goal. Senior Kendall Frey has put nine of her 12 attempts on net, while junior Lana Spitler is 14 for 20, including a 5-for-5 performance against Loyola-Chicago on Aug. 23.
AN UNFORTUNATE DOZEN
East Carolina had 12 of its shots saved by Loyola-Chicago goalkeeper Maddie Ford on Aug. 23, marking the first time an opposing goalkeeper has made 12 saves against the Pirate offense since Francis Marion during the 2005 season.
FRESHMEN FITTING IN
Three Pirate freshmen, defender Lindsey Tornabene, forward Courtney Cash and defender Madeleine Watson have seen significant minutes early on this season. Tornabene has started four times, while Cash and Watson have played big minutes as substitutes.
COUNTING DOWN
East Carolina women's soccer begins the 2015 season just eight victories shy of 200 in its history. Since the inception of the program in 1994, the Pirates have averaged greater than nine victories per season.
