GREENVILLE, N.C. - Winners of two-straight matches, the East Carolina women's soccer team will head to Charlotte for a non-conference battle on Sunday, Sept. 13. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., at Transamerica Field.
"Charlotte is a rival of ours," head coach Rob Donnenwirth said. "In the old Conference USA days, they were our biggest rival, so this is going to be a big game for us and they're a tough team."
LAST TIME OUT
In front of a record-shattering crowd of 1,287 fans at Johnson Soccer Stadium, freshman striker Courtney Cash scored a golden goal in the 107th minute to provide East Carolina a 1-0 victory over Western Carolina on Friday night. The score was the first of Cash's collegiate career, while junior midfielder Kelsey Reeves put a team and career-high three shots on goal. Junior striker Lana Spitler assisted on the game-winning goal for her second helper of the season and redshirt senior goalkeeper Saundra Baron made four saves in her second-straight shutout and fourth on the year.
ALL-TIME VERSUS CHARLOTTE
The 49ers lead the Pirates, 7-3-1, in the all-time series and will meet for the first time since Sept. 29, 2013 on Sunday. ECU has won two of the last three meetings, including a 2-0 home win in the most recent matchup. The last time the clubs met in Charlotte (Sept. 4, 2011), the Pirates escaped with a 3-1 victory.
SCOUTING THE 49ERS
Charlotte enters Sunday's match with a 4-3 overall record despite losing each of its last two matches, including a 2-1 home setback against American Athletic Conference member USF on Friday. Striker Martha Thomas leads the 49ers with a team-high six goals and two assists for 14 points on 33 shots taken. Megan McCalister ranks second on the squad with three goal and two assists for eight points. Goalkeeper Annika McHenry has started all seven matches and allows an average of two goals per game.
Déjà VU
East Carolina's 1-0 double overtime home win over Western Carolina on Sept. 11 finished in an awfully similar fashion as the last time the two teams met in Greenville during the 2013 campaign.
BARON'S BARREN NET
Redshirt senior goalkeeper has recorded four shutouts and 0.94 goals against average in ECU's first seven matches this season. The Greensboro, N.C., native has blanked opponents in 10 in her last 15 starts dating back to 2014.
COUNTING DOWN
East Carolina women's soccer is just seven victories shy of 200 in the program's history. Since the inception of the program in 1994, the Pirates have averaged greater than nine victories per season.
TOUGH STRETCH
On Sunday, East Carolina will close out what might be the most rigorous portion of its 2015 schedule, a stretch of five non-conference road matches in six games. As part of that, the Pirates recently completed a four-game road trip.
AAC GOALKEEPER-OF-THE-WEEK
Redshirt senior Saundra Baron was named the first American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper-of-the-Week for the 2015 season on Aug. 24 after posting back-to-back shutouts against George Mason and Loyola-Chicago. She made six saves across 200 scoreless minutes to help the Pirates to a 1-0-1 record.
