Pirates Fall To SMU, 1-0, In Conference Clash
October 12, 2016 | Soccer
RALEIGH, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team surrendered the deciding goal inside the final eight minutes of regulation and suffered a 1-0 American Athletic Conference loss to SMU on Wednesday night at Dail Soccer Field on the NC State University campus.
The match was played in Raleigh due to flood conditions caused in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.
SMU (10-3-1, 4-0-1 AAC) outshot the Pirates, 17-11, overall and 8-6 in shots on goal while owning a 9-2 advantage in corner kick chances. Senior Kelsey Reeves and junior Rachel Renfrow led ECU with two shots apiece.Ā Goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers made six saves.
THE GOAL
83rd Minute: The Mustangs put pressure on the Pirates' back line with time winding down when they played a ball into the goal box from the near-side midfield. The cross was headed into a mix of players inside the box where Claire Oates collected the loose ball and touched a shot off the left goal post and across the goal line to put SMU in front, 1-0.
HEAD COACH ROB DONNENWIRTH QUOTE
"Our team played with a lot of heart tonight. I thought they did a lot of good things against a good SMU team. We didn't give them a lot of good looks or free headers. It's a tough one. I thought we've played well enough to win a few conference games already, and it just hasn't happened for us yet. Caroline had a great game today. You can tell she is just competing and she made some great saves for us tonight."
