Countee, McGeehan Reach Doubles Quarterfinals At ITA Regionals
October 17, 2016 | Men's Tennis
CARY, N.C. - Juniors Kasey Countee and Freddie McGeehan reached the quarterfinals of the doubles draw, as the East Carolina men's tennis team concluded play in the 2016 ITA Carolinas Regional at Cary Tennis Park on Monday.
Play began Friday with the first two rounds of singles play where McGeehan, Countee and Fredric Lehfeldt won their first round matchups. Countee was the only Pirate to advance to Saturday's third round where he bowed out against the nation's No. 75 player Igor Smelyanski of Clemson.
Vlad Anghel dropped his first-round match in three sets, but bounced back with a trio of consolation draw victories to reach the semifinals of the bracket.
Doubles was where ECU made its largest imprint at the tournament, as Countee and McGeehan eased past a UNCG duo in round one, before dismantling North Carolina's tandem in round two. The Pirates earned a hard fought victory over College of Charleston in Sunday's third round, before suffering a tough 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 1-0(5) defeat against Duke in Monday's quarterfinal.
The Pirates return to action Oct. 21-23 at NC State's Wolfpack Invitational. Matches will be played at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
