GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina alum and two-time conference player-of-the-year selection Frida Gustafsson Spang carded a 4-under par 356 during five rounds of qualifying school to earn her Ladies European Tour (LET) card for 2017. Spang becomes the first Pirate to secure a full priority card on either the Ladies Professional Golf Association or Ladies European Tour in program history, former Pirate standout Adrienne Millican had conditional status back in 2006.
The Kinna, Sweden native fired rounds of 69, 72, 69, 71 and 75 moving up eight spots on the final day finishing tied for 21st in the final stage of the Lalla Aicha Tour School in Morocco. Exactly 30 players qualified for Category 8 Membership of the LET.
"Qualifying school is a tough and it's a tough tournament," ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams said. "The pressure to play for your job for 2017 is immense and we are excited for Frida to earn her tour card on the LET. I feel she will use the experience in dealing with this pressure to her advantage and we have high expectations for her rookie year on tour!"
In her four years as a member of the Pirate golf team, Spang sported a 73.31 career average in 46 events, which is the lowest in school history. To go along with her seven wins, she also tallied 12 top-5, 21 top-10 and 33 top-20 finishes, which included a tie for 19th in the 2016 Baton Rouge Regional.
A 2016 Second-Team All-America selection by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA), Spang recorded 10 top-11 finishes and set the program's single-season standard with four tournament wins (UCF Challenge, 3M Augusta Invitational, Briar's Creek Invitational and the American Championships).
Spang was selected as the 2016 American Athletic Conference Women's Golfer-of-the-Year and garnered a unanimous first-team all-conference nod for the second-straight year. She became just the second golfer in program history to take home multiple player-of-the-year honors joining former Pirate Abby Bools (2008, 2010/co), which came as a member of Conference USA. Back in 2013, Spang became the first golfer in C-USA history to be named Player and Freshman-of-the-Year in the same season. She is also just the third Pirate golfer to garner four-straight all-conference nods joining Bools (2007-10) and Fanny Wolte (2011-14).
