PROVIDENCE, R.I. - East Carolina senior Frida Gustafsson Spang has been named the American Women's Golfer-of-the-Week for the second time this spring according to an announcement by the league office Wednesday.
The Sweden native recorded her fifth career individual title posting a 5-under par 211 (73-71-67) en route to her second-lowest 54-hole total of the season at the 3M Augusta Invitational in Augusta, Ga.
Spang, who entered the final round tied for ninth, notched eight birdies, three bogies and seven pars for a score of 67 (5-under), which tied a season-low round. During the two-day, she posted a tournament-best 16 birdies and 28 pars. Spang also stood among the leaders (top 5) in par-4 scoring (t2nd/3.90) and par-5 scoring (t2nd/4.42).
With the win, she tied former Pirate great Adrienne Millican (2002-05) with the most wins in program history (five). Spang, who is currently ranked No. 15 nationally by Golfstat - the highest individual ranking ever by an ECU women's golfer, boasts a 73.34 career stroke average, which is first all-time. She has recorded nine top 5 placements, 16 top 10's and 28 top 20 finishes in her career.
The weekly honor is her second in the American and fifth of her career (three in Conference USA). Back in September of 2014, Spang was named AAC Golfer-of-the-Month prior to raking home 2015 First-Team American All-Conference honors.
On the season, Spang owns a 72.05 stroke average with two wins, three top 2 finishes, four top 5's, five top 10's and six top 20's in seven events. In 21 rounds, she has shot 73 or better 17 times and has carded rounds of sub-70 on four occasions.
No. 34 ECU (84-19-2) will return to action on Mar. 21 when it travels to Charleston, S.C. to participate in the Briar's Creek Invitational.
