ECU Falls to George Washington, 4-3
April 01, 2016 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis team nearly rebounded from a lost doubles point, but suffered a 4-3 home defeat to George Washington on Friday afternoon.
The Colonials pulled away in doubles action early on with breaks on courts one and three while the Pirates held serve on court two. George Washington was able to hold on from that point and closed out No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, 6-4, respectively to claim the first point of the match and take a 1-0 overall lead.
The two sides exchanged blows to start singles play, as the Colonials pushed their advantage to 2-0 with a victory on court one, but Fredric Lehfeldt responded with a 6-3, 6-1 win of his own out of the No. 3 spot in the lineup to cut ECU's deficit in half.
George Washington closed out court two to push the Pirates to the brink with a 3-1 lead, but James Ling and Will Bissett rallied back from lost second sets to claim victories on courts four and six. The Colonials' Cahit Kapukiran bounced back from a lost first and won a second-set tie break to force a third set against Vlad Anghel on court five, before closing out the final frame to clinch the match.
East Carolina returns to action Tuesday, April 5 when it hosts Campbell in non-conference action. First serve is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., at the River Birch Tennis Center.
