Spang, Frey Receive 2016 NCAA Woman-of-the-Year Nominations

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Recent graduates of East Carolina University, golfer Frida Gustafsson Spang and soccer player Kendall Frey have been nominated for the 2016 NCAA Woman-of-the-Year Award.
The Woman-of-the-Year Award recognizes female student-athletes for outstanding academic achievement, athletics excellence, community service and leadership. Frey and Spang are two of 231 NCAA Division I and 517 total nominees – the most ever in the 26-year history of the Woman-of-the-Year program.
A Kinna, Sweden native, Spang was named Second-Team All-America by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) after recording 10 top-11 finishes and set the program's single-season standard with four tournament wins (UCF Challenge, 3M Augusta Invitational, Briar's Creek Invitational and the American Championships) She was also selected as the 2016 American Athletic Conference Women's Golfer-of-the-Year and garnered a unanimous first-team all-conference nod for the second-straight year. Spang was named league golfer-of-the-week three times (Feb. 10, Mar. 15 and Mar. 26) and participated in four consecutive NCAA Regionals.
A Chester Springs, Pa., native, Frey concluded her four-year career with the Pirates No. 5 all-time in points (53) and goals scored (22) following a successful senior campaign. She was chosen to the NSCAA's All-Northeast Region Third Team and All-American Athletic Conference First Team after leading ECU in points (17), assists (5) and tied for tops on the team in goals scored (6), while her five helpers ranked eighth in the league. Frey was named to the All-American Athletic Conference Second Team and the league's all-tournament team in 2014, before being recognized for her achievements in the classroom with a selection to the NSCAA's Scholar All-South Region Team. In 2013, she received an All-Conference USA Third Team nod and was tabbed to the all-tournament team, after being listed to the C-USA All-Freshman Team in 2012.
Captains for their respective teams on the playing fields, both were equally distinguished in the classroom where Frey sported a 3.71 grade point average and completed her bachelor's degree in communications, while Spang posted a 3.23 GPA a fashion merchandising major with a minor in business.
Spang and Frey were also involved in community outreach registering 26 hours of service, respectively, during the 2015-16 academic calendar. Spang's contributions spread across time with Aces for Autism, Women in Sports Day and the Wounded Warrior Project, while Frey's involvement includes the Boys & Girls Club of America, Cyprus Glen Retirement Community and events with Eastern North Carolina's Stop Human Trafficking Now efforts. Frey was also chosen as ECU's 2016 Female Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year at its annual Breakfast of Champions.
