MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ā East Carolina opened the 2016-17 season finishing in eighth place at the Minnesota Invitational Tuesday afternoon with a tournament score of 904 (40-over). The two-day, 54-hole event was being held at the par-72, 6,110-yard Minikahda Club.
The Pirates (3-7) carded a final round 307 (19-over) picking up wins over host Minnesota and a pair of Big 12 programs in Kansas and Kansas State. Furman (882) claimed top team honors winning the tiebreaker over Purdue (882) with the fifth player score. Texas (891) took third followed by Wisconsin (892) and TCU (895).
Lisa Pettersson notched her fifth career Top 5 finish with a two-day score of 218 (2-over) to pace the Pirates. The junior posted a final round of 74, which included two birdies, 12 pars and four bogeys. She finished among the tournament leaders in par-5 scoring (t1st/4.58), total birdies (t2nd/12) and par-3 scoring (t2nd/3.00).
Kate Law (225/9-over) claimed a share of 22nd place after her round of 79 (7-over) where she registered 11 pars and seven bogeys. The sophomore stood among the tournament leaders in par-3 scoring (t6th/3.17), par-5 scoring (t13th/4.83) and total birdies (t21st/7). Fellow classmate Carley Cox, who ranked among the tournament leaders in par-3 scoring (t4th/4.67) and total birdies (t11th/9), finished 43rd after her round of 77 (5-over) for a 54-hole score of 232 (16-over).
Rounding out the Pirates' roster was the freshmen duo of Dorthea Forbrigd and Siranon Shoomee, who were participating in their first collegiate tournaments. Forbrigd (233) tallied one birdie, nine pars, six bogeys and a pair of double bogeys for a final round score of 81 (9-over) and a share of 44th place. Shoomee (235) recorded three birdies, eight pars, six bogeys and one double bogey for a 5-over 77 and a share of 48th.
The Pirates will be back in action Sept. 26-27 when they host the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, which will be held at the Greenville County Club.
