September 30, 2016 | Cross Country
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina men's and women's cross country teams are back in action Saturday morning, heading north to Pennsylvania for the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University. The men are slated to run in the College Gold 8K event at 11 a.m. while the women will race in the College Gold 6K approximately 45 minutes later.
The Paul Short run is one of the largest cross country meets in the nation with approximately 6,000 athletes from nearly 450 colleges and high schools competing this year.
The 2016 edition of the Paul Short Run features a deep field of talent both regionally and nationally. Thirty-four teams ranked in this week's USTFCCCA national polls will be competing at this year's meet, with Georgetown leading the way in Division I at No. 8 (men) and No. 19 (women). Iona (No. 16), Columbia (No. 25) and Penn (No. 26) will also joins the men's field, while No. 22 Penn and 29th ranked Yale will compete on the women' side.
"This is the fourth meet of the cross country season and, as I've stated before, we are constantly looking for improvement in each and every meet," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "This weekend's meet is without question the toughest competition that we will be seeing all year long until we get to the American Athletic Conference Championship and our NCAA Southeast Regional Championship.
"There is a lot of positive energy and the kids are running with a lot of confidence at this point in the season. We are looking for positive performances on both the men's and women's teams to keep this momentum moving forward."
Caroline Reiser excelled at last year's Paul Short Run, turning in the third-fastest 6K time in program history after crossing the finish line in 21:10. On the men's side, Jorge Montes finished with a personal-best 8K time of 25:18.
