January 25, 2017 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina Men's Tennis team remains undefeated following a 7-0 road victory over George Mason (0-2) Wednesday afternoon. The win marks back-to-back seasons in which the Pirates begin 3-0 for the first time since 2010 and 2011.
Â
"It was good to get one road match under our belt," head coach Shawn Heinchon said. "The doubles were super close but once we got through that I think we did a good job of settling in and playing good singles."
Â
Vlad Anghel and Fredric Lehfeldt improved to 2-0 in doubles play with a 6-3 win over Andrew Curtis and Eddie Ayers at No. 2 doubles. Freddie McGeehan and Kasey Countee teamed up for the third time this season in the No. 1 spot to defeat Jimmy Lange and Jakob Neilsen 7-6(3) improving their season mark to 2-1. No. 3 doubles also went into a tiebreaker with Ronny Georgi and William Bissett emerging victorious over Alexis Pinsonneaul and Daniel Gutierrez in a 7-6(2) final.
Â
After securing the doubles point to enter singles play with a 1-0 lead in the match, it was smooth sailing for the Pirates. Anghel swept Neilsen at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-4 while Georgi earned a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles over George Mason's Ayers. At the top of the lineup, McGeehan dashed out with a 6-1 first set win over Lange but the match was evened in the second set when the Patriot's No. 1 player took the set 6-4. He was persistent however, rallying to a 6-1 win in the third set to earn the victory.
Â
Lehfeldt improved his singles record to 3-0 this spring with a win at No. 4 while William Bissett earned his first singles win of the season with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Giuliano Buziuanu in the No. 6 spot. After a first set loss, Kasey Countee evened the No. 5 match with a 6-3 second set win and went on to win the match with a 10-1 super tie breaker win.
