Men’s Tennis Shuts Down UConn in First AAC Match

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina defeated American Athletic Conference foe Connecticut (1-2), 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the ECU Indoor Tennis Facility to improve to 4-0 on the season. The Pirates clinched the victory after Vlad Anghel defeated Parker Goldstein at No. 2 singles securing a 4-0 lead in the match.
"It was a solid day of work for us," head coach Shawn Heinchon said. "We don't get a ton of time to enjoy our conference win though. We have a short window to get ready for UNC Asheville tomorrow morning."
The Purple and Gold won the doubles point with a sweep of the Huskies. Freddie McGeehan and Kasey Countee improved to 3-1 in dual matches winning at No. 1 doubles. Anghel and Fredric Lehfeldt won 6-5 at No. 2 doubles and Ronny Georgi and Wil Bissett completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win over UConn's Amaud Valentin and Jacob Appleton.
McGeehan got things started off in singles action with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Christopher Toner at No. 1 singles. Georgi then defeated No. 115 Valentin 6-2, 6-2 to defeat his first nationally-ranked opponent of the season. Anghel's win over Goldstein secured the win for ECU in a second set tiebreaker 6-2, 7-6(5).
Lehfeldt routed 115th-ranked Justin Warren 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles for a 5-0 Pirates' lead. Countee and Will Bissett finished the Huskies off winning their respective matches 6-4, 6-4 in the fifth and sixth spot.
East Carolina returns to the courts Sunday when the Pirates host UNC Asheville at 11:00 a.m.
