Ruiz Named American Women's Tennis Player of the Month

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Junior Celia Ruiz has been named the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Month for September, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. Ruiz reached the quarterfinals of the Oracle/ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif., Sept. 21-22.Â
After earning the program's first ITA top-100 national-ranking on Sept. 12, Ruiz defeated two higher-ranked opponents at the Oracle/ITA Masters to begin her junior year.
In the first round she defeated Marianna Petrei from Idaho, 6-3, 6-2. Petrei ranked No. 77 in the preseason ITA poll. In the second round, Ruiz defeated No. 55 Lauren Proctor of Winthrop, 6-4, 7-6 (3).  In the quarterfinals Ruiz was paired against Pepperdine's Mayar Ahmed, who was ranked 13th in the nation. Despite a competitive battle, Ahmed escaped with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ruiz.
This marks the first time Ruiz has won AAC Player of the Month honors.
