
Pirates Open Season Friday Against USC Upstate

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The 2017-18 women's basketball season is set to begin Friday, Nov. 10, when ECU hosts USC Upstate at 8 p.m. inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum following the volleyball match versus No. 17 Wichita State at 4:30 p.m.

Head Coach Heather Macy enters her eighth season at the helm of the program with 118 wins and is ascending on the all-time coaching record at ECU. She is 10 victories shy of surpassing Sharon Baldwin-Tenner (2002-10) who tops the list with 127.Â

The Pirates welcome nine new faces to the team after graduating six seniors who accounted for ECU's top scorers.

Junior Alex Frazier averaged 4.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game and enters this year as the Pirates' top offensive returner and only starter from 2016-17. Raven Johnson (3.8 ppg), Dominique Claytor (3.0 ppg) and Justice Gee (1.8 ppg) enter their sophomore campaign after a strong and developmental offseason.

The Spartans posted a 9-21 record a year ago and were picked seventh in the Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. USC Upstate has three starters back and welcomes five new faces to the squad. Head Coach Tammy George enters her 13th season as the Spartans head coach and holds a 165-196 record.

Friday night marks the first meeting between ECU and USC Upstate.
