Gameday: Pirates Host Campbell In Search Of Third Straight Win
December 03, 2017 | Men's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- ECU will end its pre-exam schedule Monday night as it welcomes longtime foe Campbell to Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum for a 7 p.m. tip-off on ESPN3. Both teams enter the game winners in each of their last two games with identical records of 4-4.
ECU evened up its overall record with a 63-57 victory over Delaware State Saturday night behind 17-point performances from Kentrell Barkley and Isaac Fleming. Barkley also grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds to help the Pirates win the battle of the boards by 18. Shawn Williams added 12 points off the bench and Jabari Craig nabbed 11 rebounds to help ECU overcome a 17 turnover game.
"We know the win was ugly but at the end of the day it's a win," Fleming said. "That's the positive thing to be taken out of it."
ECU will look to build upon the victory and look to win its third straight game for the first time since the early portion of the 2015-16 season when it won three straight against Stetson (Nov. 27), Florida Atlantic (Dec. 1) and USC Upstate (Dec. 4).
Â
Fleming has scored double figures in a season-long four straight games, averaging 18.75 points per game. He dropped 23 on North Carolina A&T and 21 on UNCW book ended by 14 and 17 point performances.
Â
Williams has scored double figures in three straight and Barkley, who needs four rebounds for 500 for his career, has posted a double-double in two of the last three.
Â
Barkley, Craig and freshman Dimitri Spasojevic all rank among the top 20 in The American in rebounding, making ECU the only team in the conference to have a trio of players ranked in that category.
Â
Campbell stands eighth in the nation in team field goal percentage (.524) following a 52.7 percent outing vs. Stetson. CU also ranks ninth in the country in 3-point accuracy (.444).Â
Â
Campbell's Chris Clemons (22.2) and Marcus Burk (19.4) are first and third, respectively, among Big South Conference scoring leaders. Shane Whitfield (12.0) has scored in double digits in four-straight games.
Â
The Pirates lead the all-time series with the Camels, 38-20 and have won 31 of 41 meetings since 1980 when both teams were Division I members. The series is the oldest in school history, dating back to East Carolina Teacher's College inaugural season of 1931-32. This will be the first time any current member of the Pirates has ever played against Campbell as this is the first meeting in the series since Jan. 2, 2014.
