February 12, 2017 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina improved to 7-1 overall with a 4-1 victory over Appalachian State Sunday afternoon. Kasey Countee secured the Pirates' win clinching his match 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
Â
"It was great to see how we responded after a tough loss on Friday," head coach Shawn Heinchon said. "The guys did a great job of getting ready for today's match and not letting there be any hangover from Richmond on Friday. From a tennis standpoint, today was the best our doubles pair Kasey [Countee] and Freddie [McGeehan] have played this year. They beat a very good team and it gave us the extra boost we needed."
Â
The Pirates dominated doubles play to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Fredric Lehfeldt and Vlad Anghel breezed past Trey Morris and Milo Bargeron at No. 2 doubles with a 6-0 win. Then Freddie McGeehan and Countee defeated Scott Webster and Jack Maddocks 6-4 to claim the doubles point for East Carolina.
Â
Webster evened things up with a 6-4, 6-3 win over McGeehan at the top of the singles lineup but East Carolina went on to win No. 2, 3 and 5 singles to clinch the Pirates' seventh win of the season.
Â
Both Anghel and Ronny Georgi won their matches in a second-set tiebreaker for the Pirates' 3-1 lead. Anghel took down Maddocks 7-5, 7-6(2) at No. 2 singles while Georgi defeated Morris 7-5, 7-6(3) in the third spot.
Â
After winning his first set 6-3 over Bargeron at No. 4 singles, Lehfeldt found himself forced into a deciding third set when the Mountaineer came back to win set two, 6-3. Countee's win at No. 5 singles then secured the win, halting play at both No. 4 and No. 6. At that time, Lehfeldt trailed 2-1 in set three while freshman Javier Renones led 5-4 in set one. It was Renones' first appearance of the season.
Â
East Carolina's win puts the Pirates back on track after losing the first match of the season, 4-3, to Richmond on Friday snapping a program-record seven-match win streak. The Purple and Gold returns to action Friday at American Athletic Conference foe Temple. First serve is slated for 10 a.m. against the Owls.
