Pirates Outlast Temple to Win 4-3
February 17, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Philadelphia, Pa. – East Carolina outlasted Temple for a 4-3 win Friday night as the Pirates improve to 8-1 overall. It marked ECU's second win over an American Athletic Conference opponent this season.
"Wow what a match," head coach Shawn Heinchon exclaimed. "To be honest Temple was better then us for most of the match. We played for four hours and for the most part they had us beat. In the end a couple things that got the boys through this one today, their hearts and their fitness. Awesome work."
Â
The Purple and Gold trailed 1-0 in the match after losing a close doubles point. Temple won the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches to lead heading into singles. Artem Kapshuk and Vineet Naran handed Freddie McGeehan and Kasey Countee a 6-3 loss at the top of the lineup while Uladzimir Dorash and Francisco Bohorquez defeated James Ling and Ronny Georgi 6-4 at No. 3 doubles. Vlad Anghel and Fredric Lehfeldt won at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, over Florian Mayer and Thomas Sevel for the Pirates only doubles win.
Â
The Owls took a 2-0 lead overall when Dorash defeated Georgi 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles but soon after Ling put ECU on the board with a win over Vineet Naran at the bottom of the lineup. McGeehan evened things up with a three-set thriller at the top of the lineup when he defeated Kapshuk. After dropping the first set 6-2, he won set two 7-6(8) in a tiebreaker and cruised to a 6-0 set three win to knot the match at 2-all.
Â
Anghel followed suit with a three-set win at No. 3 singles to give ECU a 3-2 lead. After losing set one 6-3, he forced a third set with a 6-4 set two win. Anghel clinched the win in a tiebreaker in set three. Countee secured the Pirates match-clinching fourth point with a 6-3, 6-7(9), 6-4 win over Bohorquez at No. 4 singles. Lehfeldt was the last to finish, falling to Temple's Mayer 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in three sets.
