GREENVILLE, N.C. – Caty Butler and Brock Duckworth have been named to the East Carolina soccer staff according to an announcement from 18th-year head coach Rob Donnenwirth Friday afternoon.
Â
Butler, a four-year letter winner and 2013 graduate of East Carolina, returns to Greenville after spending the 2016 season as an assistant coach at St. Bonaventure in New York. During her season with the Bonnies, Butler was responsible for leading training sessions, game analysis, organizing team travel and managing the team's equipment budget. She also was responsible for recruiting, alumni relations and running the team's social media accounts.
Â
"It's always good to bring a Pirate home," Donnenwirth said. "Caty is not only passionate about soccer but she is also passionate about ECU. I knew coaching was always in Caty's blood since I recruited her. She has prepared herself for this moment, between playing overseas, coaching at the club level and recently at the college level."
Â
Prior to landing in upstate New York, Butler earned her Masters from Durham University in England where she served as a Graduate Assistant helping the Durham's Second Team to a League Championship. As a player for Durham, she led the squad to the National Championship Semifinals and a Bucs Premier League North Championship as Durham's leading scorer during the 2013-14 season.
Â
After Durham, Butler played professional for IK Myran in Nedervetil Finland from March 2014 until August. In the summer of 2015 she was a member of the Fredericksbug Football Club in the Women's Professional Soccer League.
Â
Butler has spent time coaching with the Fredericksburg Football Club and the Fredricksburg Area Soccer association. She has also coached at various camps including Mary Washington University, East Carolina and the FASA W-League.
Â
During her four years with ECU, she was twice named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team and was honored as 2012 NSCAA Third Team Academic All-Region. N 2011 she was North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association All-State honoree in 2011 and still ranks in the Pirates' top-10 for career goals, assists and points.
Â
Butler earned her B.S. in Sports Studies from East Carolina in 2013. She is a member of the NSCAA and holds a NSCAA Level 2 Diploma and Goalkeeping Level 1 Diploma.
Â
Duckworth comes to ECU following a one-year stint at Florida International. During his time with the Panthers he was responsible for scouting, training players and goalkeepers and managing the team's analytics.
Â
"Although Brock will primarily work with our goalkeepers in day to day training, he has a great understanding of the game and will help field players as well," Donnenwirth said. "He will also serve as our recruiting coordinator as I am impressed with his organization and evaluation of players. He has coached at a number of places and will bring a unique perspective to what we do."
Â
Prior to FIU Duckworth spent the 2015 season as the director of scouting and technology for the Arkansas women's soccer program. While with the Razorbacks, he worked with heart monitors to focus on performance analysis and created a point system to tangibly evaluate players. He also assisted with the promotion of camps and clinics.
Â
Before his time in Fayetteville, he coached two seasons with both the men's and women's teams at Winthrop. There, his primary focus was with the goalkeepers and recruiting. In the 2013 season, both teams had a goal per game average around one.
Â
In the past nine years he has coached with several clubs including Sporting Arkansas, North Carolina ODP, Discoveries Soccer Club and Charlotte United. Additionally, he's spent time at the high school level with Plano East, Coastal Carolina and Ashley High School as an assistant.
Â
A four-year standout at UNC Wilmington, Duckworth played four professional seasons in the United States Soccer League as a goalkeeper for Wilmington, then Charleston (S.C.) and Charlotte.
Â
As the Starter for Wilmington in 2011 he appeared in 18 matches and had a 1.16 goals-against average with four shutouts and 46 saves. While with Charleston he had a 1.2 GAA in five games during the team's 2012 championship season. In his final two professional seasons, he appeared in 12 matches with Charlotte while the Eagles were a 2013 USL finalist.
Â
At UNCW he earned NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region honors and a pair of Colonial Athletic Association honors. He finished his career with the Seahawk's as the all-time leader in GAA (1.07), second in career shutouts (24) and third in save percentage (.787). During his collegiate career he was part of the U19 Youth National Championship team out of Texas.Â
Â
Duckworth earned his Bachelor's in Communications from UNC Wilmington in 2011.
