Campbell Edges Pirates 5-1
February 24, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Buies Creek, N.C. – East Carolina (9-2) had its three-match win streak snapped in a 5-1 loss at Campbell (9-1) Friday afternoon. Freddie McGeehan tallied the only point for the Pirates with a 6-4, 6-4 win at the top of the singles lineup.
Â
"I thought we played okay," head coach Shawn Heinchon said. "We just didn't get it done today. Credit to Campbell, they have a very solid team this year. We did a good job fighting and hanging in there, but for some reason that is always a hard place for us to win."
Â
Jonathan O'Neal and Gerard Sola defeated Ronny Georgi and James Link 6-4 at No. 3 singles while Nicolas Rakitin and Lukas Schaefer defeated Vlad Anghel and Fredric Lehfeldt 6-4 to claim the doubles point for Campbell.
Â
Fernando Clemente made quick work of James Ling at the bottom of the lineup to give the Camels a 2-0 lead in the match. McGeehan put ECU on the board next with his win over Rakitin at No. 1 singles.
Â
The remainder of the singles matches went into three sets with Lehfeldt and Kasey Countee falling at No. 4 and No. 5, respectfully, which sealed the win for Campbell. Schaefer defeated Angel 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 singles making it 5-1 Camels and Dustin Werner and Georgi's match at No. 3 singles went unfinished as the duo had just begun a third set. Â
Â
The Pirates head south to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern at 2 p.m. on Monday.
