Pirates Fall to Georgia Southern 5-2
March 06, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Statesboro, Ga. – After losing a close doubles point, East Carolina's men's tennis team won a pair of singles matches en route to a 5-2 road loss to Georgia Southern (14-4) Monday afternoon. The loss marks the third of the Pirates' spring season as the Purple and Gold is 9-3 overall.
"Today's match was a bit painful," head coach Shawn Heinchon said. "We flat out failed ourselves in the doubles. We let that slip, which made a big difference going into the singles. For the most part that has not happened to us yet this year. When we have been in a situation where we were up on a team we have closed them out. That wasn't the case today. So, credit to Georgia Southern for hanging in there, they were just a little stronger than us today."
Â
Vlad Anghel and Fredric Lehfeldt put the Pirates in the driver's seat with a 6-2 win over Artemie Amari and Stefano Di Aloy at No. 2 doubles but JC Alcala and Santiago Suarez evened things up with a 6-4 win at the bottom of the doubles lineup. The Eagles' No. 3 duo defeated ECU's Ronny Georgi and James Ling.
Â
Christian Kerrigan and Diego Finkelstein outlasted Freddie McGeehan and Kasey Countee 7-6 at No. 1 doubles to claim the point for Georgia Southern.
Â
Finkelstein won his second match of the day routing Ling 6-2, 6-1 at the bottom of the singles lineup while Eddie Landin put GSU within one point of victory with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Anghel at No. 2 singles. Countee put East Carolina on the scoreboard with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles over Amari but Di Aloy answered for Georgia Southern with a win over Georgi in straight 6-4 sets at No. 3 singles to secure the Eagles' win.
Â
With the match already decided, Lehfeldt earned a three-set win over Suarez at No. 4 singles while Alcala edged McGeehan at the top of the lineup in three sets for a 5-2 final.
Â
East Carolina returns to action Thursday with a pair of matches against Davis & Elkins (10 a.m.) and Palm Beach Atlantic (1 p.m.) in Hilton Head, S.C.
