Georgi’s Three-Set Win Lifts Pirates Over UNCG

Greensboro, N.C. – East Carolina's Ronny Georgi used a 6-1 third set win at No. 3 singles to clinch the Pirates' 4-3 win over UNCG Friday afternoon for the Purple and Gold's fourth-straight win. ECU moves to 13-3 overall while UNCG falls one game above .500 at 5-4.

"We always seem to have a 4-3 match with them and the last several years we have been on the wrong side of that, so this was nice to finally be on the good side," head coach Shawn Heinchon said. "Our singles play was not great today. We are going to need to improve on that. Great work by Ronny [Georgi] coming back from a set down to ultimately be the clincher."

After splitting No. 2 and No. 1 doubles, Kasey Countee and Ronny Georgi win 7-5 at the bottom of the lineup over UNCG's Marcus Vidgren and Jack Burkill.

Will Bissett gave East Carolina its first singles win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 6 but Daniel Hammarstedt quickly put the Spartans on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win over ECU's No. 5 player Countee. Fredric Lehfeldt's straight sets win over Warren Bryan made it 3-1 in favor of the Pirates. UNCG evened the match with wins at No. 1 and No 2 singles over Freddie McGeehan and Vlad Anghel 7-5, 6-4, and 6-1, 6-2, respectively.

With the rest of singles complete, Georgi and William Albright entered a third set at No. 3 singles that would decide the match's outcome. After losing a tough first set 6-2, Georgie battled back to win set two 6-4. He dominated the third set with a 6-1 win to clinch the victory for ECU.

The Purple and Gold rides its second-longest win streak of the season into Wednesday's home match versus Liberty. First serve is slated for 2:30 p.m.
