Pirates Fall to Winthrop on the Road
March 31, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Rock Hill, S.C. – East Carolina (14-5) lost, 4-1, on the road against Winthrop (5-10) Friday afternoon. The Pirates finish the month of March 5-3 record while Winthrop wins its third consecutive match.
Â
"This was flat out a terrible performance for our team today," head coach Shawn Heinchon said. "It was rough conditions that Winthrop handled incredibly well and we didn't. It's never easy getting through a season where you don't just simply under perform for a match, today was one of those days. Hopefully we will learn from this."
Â
Kasey Countee notched the Purple and Gold's lone point of the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Aditya Gokhale at No. 5 singles.
Â
The Pirates lost the doubles point after Freddie McGeehan and James Ling lost, 6-3, to Gokhale and Diego Quiroz at No. 2 doubles and Ruy Teixeira and Joshua Ryan defeated Vlad Anghel and Fredric Lehfeldt, 6-1, on court two.
Â
Lehfeldt lost a close first set, 7-6(3) to Gabriel Diaz and was defeated 6-3 in the second set for the loss. Teixeira beat Georgi 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles while McGeehan lost due to retirement at the top of the lineup.
