Pirates Edged by College of Charleston in Marathon Match
April 01, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Charleston, S.C. – East Carolina lost its third straight match in a 4-3 marathon contest at College of Charleston Saturday afternoon. ECU claimed the doubles point but Charleston did not go down without a fight as both teams turned up the pressure and all six singles matches went to three sets in a four and a half hour match.
Â
"What a match," head coach Shawn Heinchon said. "I'm not sure I've seen anything closer with all six singles matches going three sets. It's a heartbreaking loss when you fight so long and hard and you come up just a little short. That being said, I am proud of our guys' fight, especially after our performance yesterday. They showed a lot of guts today. I wish more people could have seen us compete today, you would have been an instant Pirate tennis fan."
Â
Will Bissett won his match at No. 5 singles when Alex Angradi retired trailing 3-1 in the third set giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Juan Estevarena defeated Vlad Anghel at No. 1 singles and Vasily Kichigin defeated Fredric Lehfeldt on court three for the Cougars to lead tie things up 2-all. Javier Renones won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at the bottom of the lineup to put the Purple and Gold within one point of victory.
Â
Rodrigo Encinas edged Kasey Countee tying things up as all eyes turned to court two where Benedict Henning and Ronny Georgi were even in a third set. Henning earned the win for the Cougars with a 7-5 deciding set.
