Pirates Drop to William & Mary 6-1
April 07, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Williamsburg, Va. – East Carolina was handed its fourth straight loss inside the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center Friday afternoon. The Pirates (14-7) dropped their final road match of the season, 6-1, to William & Mary (9-8) and return home to face Barton Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Â
"We ended up playing the match indoors because of the weather which I thought might give William & Mary a slight advantage," head coach Shawn Heinchon said. "I was way off. They are a good team and I think they played pretty good today but we should not lose to anyone that badly. We are better than that. It is normal, you go through some ups and downs as a team over the course of the spring. For some reason we are having more adversity towards the end of the year than in the beginning. We need our team leaders to step up and help us finish strong."
Â
The Tribe won the doubles point when Addison Appleby and Tristan Bautil defeated Freddie McGeehan and James Ling, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles. Christian Cargill and Damon Niquet beat Fredric Lehfeldt and Vlad Angel, 6-2, to start off the match but Ronny Georgi and Kasey Countee evened things up with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Â
Niquet defeated Countee 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles giving William & Mary a 2-0 match lead. Cargill extended the Tribe's lead to 3-0 when he defeated Anghel in consecutive 6-2 sets. Lars De Boer clinched the victory for the home team with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Will Bissett at the bottom of the lineup.
Â
Alec Miller needed a first set tie-breaker to beat Lehfeldt to open their match, 7-6(3), but eased to a win with a 6-0 second set victory on court four. McGeehan retired at the top of the lineup resulting in a loss to Aidan Talcott after trailing 6-4, 6-5 making it 6-0 overall in the match.
Â
Georgi used a three-set win, 7-5, 2-6, 10-3, over Appleby to avoid the sweep.
Â
East Carolina has two home matches remaining in the regular season before heading to the Sunshine State for the American Athletic Conference Championship April 20 in Orlando.
