INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - East Carolina junior Lisa Pettersson is one of six individual golfers that have been selected to participate in the Athens Regional (University of Georgia Golf Course) of the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Regionals the NCAA Committee announced Thursday morning on the Golf Channel.
With her selection, Pettersson will participate in her second-straight NCAA postseason event and is the fourth player in program history to earn an individual bid joining Adrienne Millican (2004), Lene Krog (2007) and Frida Gustafsson Spang (2015) – both Millican and Krog advanced to the NCAA Championships.
"Obviously, we are very disappointed we did not receive a national at-large bid to the NCAA Women's Golf Championship," ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams said. "We were either the first or second team on the outside of the cut line for that at-large bid. However, I'm very excited for Lisa to have her season extended with her individual bid. She has worked extremely hard and has had a great year for us! I look forward to watching her compete in the Athens Regional. With her selection, this makes 15 years in a row we have had the team (11) and/or an individual (four) represent our program in the NCAA Women's Golf Championship."
Pettersson has recorded six Top-15 finishes with two coming during the spring portion of the Pirates' schedule. The Sweden native, who won individual medalist honors at the Pinehurst Challenge in October, claimed a share of 13th place at 2017 American Women's Golf Championships with a 4-over par 220 (73-75-72).
On the season she owns a team-best 73.30 season stroke average that ranks as the second-lowest single-season stroke average in the Pirate annals, trailing only Spang's 72.25 during the 2015-16 campaign. As a freshman she posted a 76.57 average with one Top-10 finish, in her first collegiate event at the Minnesota Invitational (224/8-over). Last year she stood second on the squad with a 74.67 stroke average and recorded six Top-15 placements (four Top 5's) on her way to unanimous First-Team All-American Athletic Conference honors.
During her three years as a member of the golf team, Pettersson owns a 74.79 career average in 33 events, which is the second lowest in program history. She has posted one career win to go along with eight Top-5's, 11 Top-10's and 14 Top-20 finishes.
Although East Carolina did not receive an at-large bid, with Pettersson's selection the Pirates will be represented in NCAA Regional competition for the 15th-straight season in 17 years of the programs existence.
Four regional tournaments will be conducted May 8-10 to determine the championships field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition and all national championships policies apply.
A total of 384 participants have been selected for regional competition. Of these players, 132 will advance to the championships finals. Six teams and three individuals will advance from each regional.
The national championships will be May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., hosted by Northern Illinois University. The Golf Channel will televise the final three days of the championship live.
