June 22, 2017 | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving, Swimming & Diving
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina University men's and women's swimming and diving teams have been named College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Teams, according to an announcement by the organization Wednesday.
Â
Teams that achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the 2017 spring semester were recognized. More than 700 swimming and diving teams across all NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA divisions were honored for their achievements.
Â
"The time and effort our team has put into their academics, balanced with the time commitment necessary to swim/dive at this level, is something I have always admired about our team," head coach appointee Matt Jabs said. "It is a true example of what a student-athlete is all about. I think it also says a lot about the outstanding student development office and services we have here at ECU. Our academic advisor Leigh Cunius has done a tremendous job helping our athletes succeed in the classroom and balance life between academics and athletics. As a staff, we couldn't be prouder."Â Â
Â
ECU's men's squad produced a GPA of 3.10 during the spring semester and was one of 100 Division I men's programs honored, including one of four from the American Athletic Conference. With a cumulative GPA of 3.49, the Pirate women's team was one of 175 Division I women's programs nationally and one of six from the AAC to earn the accolade. The women also turned in the second-highest GPA among programs in the state of North Carolina.
Â
The men had 14 student-athletes achieve a 3.0 or higher GPA while the women sported 20 in that same range.
Â
Individually, junior Vendela Norrman (4.0 GPA) earned CSCAA All-America status (4.0) while Blaz Demsar (3.88),  Grega Popovic (3.83), Fran Krznaric (3.75), Will Hicks (3.67), Tori Angermeier (4.0), Alicia Roueche (4.0), Julie Lajoie (3.94) and Marion Abert (3.50) garnered All-America Honorable Mention laurels.
