
Six Golfers Earn WGCA All-America Scholar Honors

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – For the first time in program history, six members of the East Carolina women's golf team (Catherine Ashworth, Carley Cox, Dorthea Forbrigd, Kate Law, Lisa Pettersson, and Siranon Shoomee) have been named 2016-17 Division I All-America Scholars, according to an announcement by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA).
With Ashworth (twice), Law (twice) and Pettersson (three times) selections, it marks the 13th-straight year that at least two Pirates have been named All-America Scholars in the same year (2005-present).
"The accomplishments of this year's team in the classroom and on the golf course were impressive," said ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams. "This is the most selections we have ever had in one year and to think we were three rounds shy from having all seven team members named to the All-America Scholar Team. I can't say enough good things about the commitment and dedication these young women gave to our program this year. It's very exciting to see their hard work pay off with this announcement and even more exciting to have every one of them returning for the upcoming year. These young women join a very special group, who have been named All-America Scholar's in the history of our program."
Ashworth participated in seven events posting a 78.05 stroke average during her sophomore season. The Fuquay Varina, N.C. native recorded a pair of Top 15 finishes with a season-best 54-hole score of 223 (7-over) coming at the River Landing Classic where she took share of 14th. During second round action in Pinehurst, she recorded a career-low round of 70, while posting nine rounds of 76 or better. In the classroom, Ashworth is a two-time WGCA All-America Scholar, a four-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member and a 2016 American Athletic Conference All-Academic selection majoring in business with a concentration in marketing.
In her first year with the Pirates, Cox played in 10 events registering a 77.30 stroke average to stand fifth on the team. The China Grove, N.C. native shot a personal-best 222 (6-over) at the Pinehurst Challenge where she finished tied for 19th, her best finish of the year. In all, she registered 11 rounds of 76 or better with a season-low 72 on two occasions (River Landing/first round and Pinehurst Challenge/third round). Off the course Cox is a two-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member majoring in communications.
Forbrigd made a splash during her rookie season appearing in 11 events where she posted a 74.55 stroke average to rank second on the team. The Oslo, Norway native recorded a pair of Top 10 and six Top 15 finishes, which included a share of fifth place at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate after carding a 2-over 218. She registered nine rounds of 73 or better including a career-low 67 during final round action at the Hurricane Invitational, which is tied for the fifth-lowest 18-hole score in program history. A business management major, Forbrigd is a two-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member.
Law posted a 74.85 scoring average in 11 events as a sophomore to rank third on the club during the 2016-17 season. The Maryborough, Australia native recorded three Top 15 and four Top 20 finishes including a share of eighth place at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate. At the UCF Challenge, she carded a 4-under par 212 claiming a share of 12th place, which included an opening round 67. In all, she registered nine rounds of 73 or better while also shooting an even par 216 at the Briar's Creek Invitational. Off the course Law is a two-time WGCA All-America Scholar, a four-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member and a 2016 AAC All-Academic selection majoring in business management with a concentration in accounting.
A First-Team All-AAC selection for the second consecutive year, Pettersson led the Pirates with a 73.50 stroke average, which ranks second on the all-time single-season charts. The Taby, Sweden native tallied four Top 5 finishes, five Top 10's and six Top 15's in 12 events which included individual medalist honors at the Pinehurst Challenge with a personal-best 8-under par 208. Pettersson closed out her junior season participating in the 2017 NCAA Athens Regional where she finished tied for 50th with a score of 227 (11-over). A three-time WGCA All-America Scholar, a six-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll and two-time AAC All-Academic selection, Petterrson is pursuing her undergraduate degree in economics.
Shoomee capped off her freshman season participating in 11 events where she posted a 75.48 stroke average, fourth on the team. The Sanford, N.C. native recorded three Top 10 finishes which included a share of fourth place at the River Landing Classic (4-over, 220) and claimed fifth at the Pinehurst Challenge (even par, 216) which came in her third collegiate tournament. She registered 12 rounds of 74 or betters including a season-low round of 68 during second round action at the 2017 AAC Championships, where she finished tied for 10th. In the classroom, she is a two-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member majoring in engineering.
In the 17-year history of the Lady Pirates golf program, 13 golfers have tallied 43 WGCA All-America Scholar honors.
