GREENVILLE, N.C. – Eleven events, including the Pirate Collegiate Classic, highlight the 2017-18 East Carolina women's golf schedule head coach Kevin Williams announced Monday. The Pirates, who have made eight regionals in the last 10 years, will host the Pirate Collegiate Classic Sept. 25-26 at the Greenville Country Club.
"I'm very excited about this years schedule," Williams said. "We look forward to defending our team titles this fall at the Pirate Collegiate Classic (formerly Lady Pirate Intercollegiate) and Pinehurst Challenge. We are excited about the strength of the teams in each of the events, but especially those we will face in Minnesota, Louisville, Atlanta, Orlando and Puerto Rico. All five tournaments are full of NCAA teams from this past year. It is a great way to see where we stand as a team for the 2017-18 season."
For the fourth-straight year, ECU will open the season playing in the Minnesota Invitational (Sept. 11-12), which will be held at the Prestwich Golf Club in Minneapolis, Minn. Three years ago, the Pirates won the invitational posting a 54-hole score of 879 and were led by Frida Gustafsson Spang, who claimed individual medalist honors.
Seventeen teams highlight the Pirate Collegiate Classic – an event the Pirates have won seven times in 16 years of hosting including the last two seasons. Up next is the Pinehurst Challenge (Oct. 9-10), which will be played at Pinehurst No. 1 in Pinehurst, N.C. where the Pirates have won consecutive team titles in 2015 (857/school-record) and 2016 (861).
Rounding out the fall portion of ECU's schedule is a return trip Louisville, Ky. to participate in the Cardinal Cup (Oct 21-22) and the Ladies Fall Intercollegiate in Atlanta, Ga., which will be played at the Atlanta Athletic Club (Oct. 27-29).
A challenging spring schedule begins with UCF Challenge (Feb. 4-6) at the Eagle Creek Golf Club, which will mark the eighth time in the last nine years the Pirates have participated in the annual event with their best finish coming in the spring of 2016 (fifth place). The following week ECU will play in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club (Feb. 11-13).
ECU will co-host the River Landing Classic with UNC Wilmington (March 5-6) at the River Landing Club in Wallace, N.C. The Pirates have registered three consecutive Top 4 finishes in the event including winning the team title in the spring of 2016.
Trips to Charleston, S.C. for the Briar's Creek Invitational (March 19-20) and Mount Pleasant, S.C. for the 2018 Charleston Invitational (April 2-3) precede the American Athletic Conference Championships (April 15-17), which will be played at the Conservatory Course in Palm Coast, Fla. This NCAA Championships will be held from May 17-23 at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.
"In addition to the challenging competition, the venues where we will play are all outstanding," Williams added. "Being able to play outstanding courses like Atlanta Athletic Club, which has hosted the 1990 Women's US Open as well as the 2001 and 2011 PGA Championship is special. We are also playing RiverTowne Golf Club, which hosted a LPGA tour event for many years and Briar's Creek, which just recently hosted the Carolinas Amateur."
The Pirates return seven golfers, who appeared in at least five events including four upperclassmen in senior Lisa Pettersson along with juniors Catherine Ashworth, Carley Cox and Kate Law. The sophomore trio of Dorthea Forbrigd, Siranon Shoomee and Grave Yatawara will be joined by true freshman Kathryn Carson.
