The Pirates (7-9, 1-4) suffered their second straight defeat Thursday night falling to No. 5 Wichita State, 95-60, while the Cougars (13-3, 3-1) posted a 104-71 victory over Tulsa the same night burying a conference record 18 3-pointers.
Â
Houston senior Rob Gray, a North Carolina native, scored a game-high 34 points including 22 in the first 20 minutes of play for his fifth career 30-point game. He leads The American in scoring with more than 19 points a game and ranks fourth on the league's all-time points scored list with 1,349.

Houston has the second-highest scoring offense in The American, averaging 81.0 points per game with an average margin of victory of 13.2 points. They also rank second in the league with a 48.3 field goal shooting percentage and are one of three conference teams shooting over 40 percent from outside the 3-point arc (.408).

The Pirates have the league's best 3-point percent defense, holding their opponents to 31.2 percent outside the arc.
Â
ECU is led by senior B.J. Tyson, who needs 26 points to become the seventh player in school history with 1,400 career points. He's averaging a team-high 15.8 points per game and ranks third on The American all-time scoring list.
Â
Junior Kentrell Barkley is second on the team in scoring (12.5 ppg) and rebounding (6.3 rpg). After being held under double figures in the first two conference games, he scored double digits in each of the last three games, averaging 14.3 points per game and shooting 53.3 percent (16-30) from the field and 41.7 percent (5-12) from 3.
