Mired in a three-game losing streak, ECU looks to end the slide against the last team it beat, USF, Wednesday night inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
The Pirates defeated the Bulls, 67-65, in Tampa two weeks ago, overcoming a 10-point deficit. B.J. Tyson's 3-pointer with two minutes remaining put ECU ahead to stay before Kentrell Barkley sank a pair of free throws with less than a minute to play.
Barkley had 16 points to lead the Pirates, while Tyson added 12.
"Because you beat a team once, it doesn't mean you roll the balls out and the same result is going to happen," ECU Interim Head Coach Michael Perry said. "We need to mature and grow up quickly in terms of accepting the responsibility of preparing really hard for this next opponent. [USF] is going to come in here with a bit of a chip on their shoulder."
USF had a chance to win, but Terrence Samuel's 3-point attempt was off the mark and Isaiah Manderson put back tip was no good and the Pirates escaped with a road victory.
Stephan Jiggetts led the Bulls with 18 points, while their leading scorer, Payton Banks, played just 10 minutes after missing the two previous games with an illness.
Banks returned to the USF lineup Saturday against Cincinnati and scored 22 points off the bench to lead all scorers in the game.
Banks averages 13.3 points per game to pace the Bulls.
Tyson leads ECU with 15.5 points per game and is 14 points shy of 1,400 for his career. Barkley and junior Isaac Fleming are both averaging more than 12 points a contest.
USF leads the all-time series by a game, 8-7, but the Pirates hold a 4-3 advantage at home.
