WILMINGTON, N.C. – In the final tournament of the fal season, the ECU men's tennis team closed the UNCW Fall Invite with strong play from one of its freshman and its doubles tandems.

"Perfect way for us to finish the fall," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "We had some mixed results in singles, but played a bunch of good matches, which is exactly what we are looking for this time of the year. Hopefully this event will help keep our guys motivated and pushing themselves to improve as we move into our eight hour work week. I thought Diogo (Marques) had a great event. He has had a very impressive fall already and added to that with some more quality wins this weekend"

Diogo Marques started the tournament slow, dropping his first singles match to Winthrop's Diego Quiroz and falling in his first doubles match, as he and his partner, Simon Labbe, lost to Jake Munns and Jake Bhangdin of Furman. However, the freshman from Setubal, Portugal did not lose the rest of the weekend. In singles, Marques knocked off Munns of Furman and Michael Copeland of Wilmington. He also teamed with Austin Allen to earn a pair of wins on the doubles courts.

Joining Marques in earning a 2-1 singles record over the weekend was Javier Renones. Renones picked up victories against Alberto Tinagli of Winthrop and Jake Bhangdia of Furman. Also earning a win each was Wisse Jonker, Ronny Georgi and Allen.

In doubles, Jonker and Renones started the weekend with a loss, falling to Furman's duo of Ivan Mitric and James Singerman. After that, the pair won their final two matches, beating the tandem of Tengali and Connor Williamson of Winthrop and the duo of Austin Hussey and Michael Morphy of Wilmington.

With the fall coming to a close, the Pirates will begin preparations for the spring and dual match season. Dual matches will begin in January, with the full schedule being released later this winter.
