GREENVILLE, N.C. – After getting the season off on the right foot, the ECU women's basketball team is looking to start 2-0 for the sixth time in the past seven seasons as the Pirates host Monmouth on Friday evening in Williams Arena inside Minges Coliseum.
Â
ECU (1-0) started its season with an 84-69 home win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday night. The Pirates were led by the trio of Lashonda Monk, Raven Johnson and Jade Lewis on the offensive end. Monk and Johnson both led the team with 19 points, as Johnson shot 4-of-5 from behind the three-point arc. Lewis buried four triple of her own on the way to 16 points.
Â
The Pirates were buoyed by their bench, as ECU's reserves outscored Maryland Eastern Shore's bench 35-11. The Hawks held the rebounding edge 44-39, but both teams finished with 10 second-chance points. It was the seventh straight season ECU had opened the season with a victory.
Â
Monmouth (0-1) struggled in its season-opening game, falling to Buckenell 70-32. The Hawks shot just 21.1 percent from the field and did not have a scorer reach double-figures. Monmouth finished the 2017-18 season with a 10-21 overall record and reached the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) quarterfinals. This season, Monmouth was picked to finish in seventh in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Alexa Middleton is the top returner for the Hawks, having averaged 6.3 points and a team-best 6.7 rebounds a season ago.
Â
ECU is 2-0 all-time against Monmouth. The two victories came in 2011 and 2012. The 2011 win was the only time the two programs have met in Greenville, with ECU winning 75-52 begind Kristine Mial's 16 points. In Dec 2012, the Pirates won 64-49 in Annapolis, Md., thanks to Britny Edwards' team-high 18 points.
Â
Friday night's tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., as the first part of a doubleheader. The ECU men's basketball team will take on James Madison following the women's game. For tickets, fans can visit here.
